African Union And The PRC Strive To Widen Communication Outreach For The Popularisation Of The Unions’ Activities

A two-day workshop

Té / 26 September 2012

The Directorate of Information and Communication (DIC) of the African Union Commission (AUC) is organizing a two-day workshop on 1st and 2nd October 2012 at the AU headquarters under the theme: “Engaging the DIC with Press Attaches of AU Member State Embassies in a bid to broaden outreach and expand knowledge about the Union” .

The objective of the workshop is to consolidate a good working relationship with the focal persons responsible for communication issues in the embassies of AU Member States in Addis Ababa, so as to increase awareness about the African Union through the direct information flow from the AU headquarters. This action is in line with the DIC Communication Strategy for the African Union which aims at using all different types of existing tools to communicate the vision, missions, strategic planning and activities of the Union, while ensuring mass popularization of the AU activities, in a bid to narrow the bridge between the African population and the Continental Organisation.

The workshop will discuss mechanisms of using the partnership between the DIC and the Press Attaches to create joint communication activities aimed at elaborating national campaign strategies to improve the visibility of the AU in the respective member countries through the different communication tools including mass media at national levels.

The outcome of the workshop on engaging focal persons responsible for communication in the AU Member States Embassies shall be included as part of the action plan in the African Union Communication Strategy 2013 -2016.

Participants at the workshop will include: focal persons on communication issues in the Embassies of AU Member States; communication and information officers from UN agencies, European Union, focal persons in communication from AU departments, the staff of the Directorate of Information and Communication, and information officers of AU Partner organisations based in Addis Ababa, among others.

Worth recalling that several communication activities have been undertaken by the AU Commission to popularise the activities of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) in view to reinforce the existing relationship between the two organs. One of such activity was the launch of a publication titled: “Membership of the Sub-Committees of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC)”, produced by the Directorate of Information and Communication in collaboration with Oxfam International- Liaison Office with the AU.

The publication was co-launched on 12 July 2012, by Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Mr. Ferdinand Montcho, Chairperson of the PRC, and Ambassador of the Republic of Benin to the AU and Ethiopia. The book launch took place at the sidelines of the 19th AU Summit at the AU headquarters.

First of its kind, the PRC Booklet is complementing the PRC Posters which is a yearly update of data, photo and detailed information about the PRC members and their respective Embassies. These publications are aimed to familiarise the public with the distinguished Ambassadors of AU Member States in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
